GM Announces Closure of Oshawa, Ont Plant

Will Also Discontinue 6 Sedans Including Chevy Volt Hybrid

2018 Chevrolet Volt

With the announcement of the closing of the Oshawa Ontario factory and four additional factories across the United States, one would think that would be enough news for the automotive world.
Unfortunately for fans of sedans developed under the various GM brands, the news didn’t stop there.

The Buick LaCrosse, Chevrolet Impala, Chevrolet Cruze, Cadillac XTS and Cadillac CT6 will be discontinued by the end of 2019.
In a surprising and maybe even confusing move, the Chevrolet Volt hybrid sedan will also be dropped in the same time frame.

While the focus is obviously to shift to fully electric and ultimately self-driving cars, the Chevrolet Volt as a gas hybrid is an excellent transitional vehicle. Something a consumer who still feels range anxiety could feel comfortable driving at a lower price point and which would help many transition off gas dependency.

It’s unclear if another gas hybrid will be introduced to replace the Volt, however it would seem odd to do so with such a limited window to transition to fully electric vehicle sales.
