The last remaining greater Vancouver drive-in, Twilight Drive-In has been around since 1955 or 1952 depending on who you ask, in various forms and locations. Originally based in Surrey and known as Hillcrest Drive-In, it was closed and demolished in 2003. In 2005 the Daulat family reopened the drive-in at its new home in Aldergrove where the tradition has continued ever since.
The drive-in is open Spring through Fall with two movies showing every night and a bonus third movie on Saturdays and long weekends.
There is also a flea market held on the property on Saturdays and Sundays, but the real magic are those late nights watching a movie and nibbling on concessions. They have a nice selection of food and drinks but remember to bring cash or your debit card, credit cards aren’t accepted and the concession is cash only.
An interesting side note is that your favorite lower mainland drive-in has not just shown movies, but has been the set for several movies, shows and ads. Most recently the Twilight Drive-In has been a location set for Riverdale and going back, has featured in Psych, Flash Gordon, Air Bud: Spikes Back and R.L Stine’s The Haunting Hour.
The Twilight Drive-In is an excellent way to see a movie and makes a great family memory. Always a great date night idea, it’s also a fun way to see a movie with friends in a more relaxed setting and even make some new friends before the movies start and during the intermissions. I’m a huge fan of drive-ins, having been to several across the country. There are less and less each year, so be sure to support them when you can!
